Description Of the Department
OPD activities—
- The Department of Dermatology and Venereology provides comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive care for patients with skin, hair, nail, and sexually transmitted diseases. The outpatient department (OPD) caters to approximately 60–80 patients daily, offering expert consultations, follow-up care, and specialized procedures.
- In addition to routine dermatological services, the department is equipped to perform a wide range of dermato-surgical procedures. Common interventions include skin biopsies, excision of benign and malignant lesions, chemical peels, cryotherapy, electrocautery, and laser treatments for various dermatological and cosmetic indications.

The department is committed to providing patient-centered, evidence-based care while maintaining high standards of clinical excellence and safety. It also serves as a training center for medical students and fostering learning in clinical dermatology, dermato-surgery, and venereology.
- The Department of Dermatology and Venereology provides dedicated inpatient care for patients requiring close observation, intensive treatment, or specialized procedures not feasible on an outpatient basis. The inpatient unit consists of 8 beds, comprising 4 male beds and 4 female beds, ensuring comfort and privacy for all patients.
- Common indications for admission include severe drug reactions, extensive or resistant skin infections, autoimmune blistering diseases, erythroderma, severe psoriasis, vasculitis, and complications related to sexually transmitted infections.
- Patients admitted to the dermatology ward receive comprehensive care involving dermatologists, nursing staff, and support personnel, with a focus on accurate diagnosis, prompt management, and holistic care. The department also provides in-hospital dermatologic consultations for patients admitted under other specialties.

Through a combination of clinical expertise and compassionate care, the inpatient unit plays a vital role in managing complex dermatologic and venereology conditions while also serving as a valuable teaching resource for postgraduate trainees and medical students.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course students will be able to:
Take appropriate history from the patients of skin & VD ♦perform the dermatological examination properly · ♦select and interpret relevant investigations ♦diagnose and manage the most common skin and venereal diseases prevalent in Bangladesh ♦deal with dermatological and venereological emergencies ♦identify problematic patients that require specialized care and refer them appropriately ♦communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues regarding complications, prognosis and others ♦participate in the related national disease control programs of skin & VD ♦conduct relevant research.

Dermato-surgery and cosmetic procedures in OPD
The Department of Dermatology and Venereology offers a range of dermato-surgical and cosmetic procedures as part of its outpatient services. These include skin biopsies, excision of benign and malignant lesions, electrocautery, cryotherapy, chemical peels, PRP for hair regrowth and acne scar, nail surgeries, and intralesional therapies, exosome therapy and P-shot.
All procedures are carried out under strict aseptic conditions by trained dermatologists, ensuring safe and effective outcomes for both therapeutic and aesthetic needs.
